Design South executed the preliminary design in response to Hartwell’s RFQ for a New City Hall and Police Department. The building embraces the historically and culturally rich architecture of Hartwell, while allowing room for contemporary expression of materials, aesthetic and functional differences. The building is sited to take advantage of the view of downtown Hartwell Square, and at the same time continue the historic pedestrian character along East Howell Street and Carter Street. Entrance into the different functions of the building is through the open atrium. The Council Chambers and Police Department are both located on the first floor, and the City Hall activities are located on the second floor. The atrium, with its large glass, will provide a panoramic view of downtown Hartwell and will service as one of the key civic gathering spots for the city of Hartwell.
