The City of Anderson acquired the Anderson Water System in 2002. After completing the Water System Business Plan, Design South was retained to complete a comprehensive water system master plan. The master planning effort included the evaluation of the existing distribution, storage, pumping, and transmission system which serves the water system’s 17,000 retail customers. Completion of this evaluation resulted in several projects including: two 500,000-gallon elevated storage tanks; 35,000 feet of 12-inch transmission mains; 90,000 feet of distribution lines; and painting and maintenance of existing elevated storage tanks.
The City of Anderson’s water distribution system contains five elevated storage tanks. The newest tank was built in 1968 and two of the existing tanks were constructed in 1940. All of the tanks in the system are constructed of welded steel components. Operating and maintaining a water system with storage tanks, particularly steel tanks, serious consideration must be given to properly maintaining them. A properly applied coating system will provide years of protection for steel tanks by helping prevent corrosion, which translates to protection for the water stored inside the tank. The project included cleaning and painting the existing five tanks and installing various appurtenance upgades. |
