Water Treatment Plant Expansion - Greer, SC
Project:
Greer Water Treatment Plant - 24 MGD Expansion
Division 1
Client:
Greer Commission of Public Works
Greer, South Carolina
Scope:
The Greer Water Treatment Plant Expansion was completed at a cost of $0.76 per gallon of added capacity versus more typical industry averages of approximately $2.00 per gallon. Greer Commission of Public Works was willing to risk their investment in the necessary engineering time and resources in order to gain regulatory approval to “high-rate” the filters and received an excellent return on their investment for their water system customers.
The water treatment plant capacity was increased by 50 percent from 16 MGD to 24 MGD with “high-rate” filtration being used to “supercharge” the existing facilities. Through the addition of more efficient systems and state-of-the-art computerized controls the throughput rate of the conventional sand filters was increased from the “industry standard” of 4 gpm/sq ft of filter surface area to 6 gpm/sq ft. Other plant systems, pumping, and piping were rehabilitated or replaced to operate at the new plant capacity afforded by the “high-rate” filters.
